File Vaults or Personal Safes is another great addition to your desktop security software arsenal! What it does, is partition off part of your hard drive and encrypt it using the latest and best security encryption. The only way to open the safe is to have a password or key. The main difference between a file vault and just standard encryption, is with standard encryption you have to encrypt every file individually. With the file vault you can just keep stuffing in as many files and folders as you want and the vault will expand in size according to your needs automatically. When you close the vault or safe it encrypts everything all over again, and FAST, might I add. There are two ways to go about making a security vault. First is to allow your software to partition your hard drive. Here’s the problem with partitioning. If you partition you will lose that space permanently unless you repartition again to get it back. Plus you have to define a set amount of space. This is an issue because you don’t know exactly how big your vault will be now or a year from now. In my opinion partitioning is not the correct method. There are programs such as My Security Vault that can make a safe/vault just as secure without creating a separate partition. It basically works in the same manner as if you created a folder. However, unlike a folder, the file vault is actually secure and can be hidden from sight, or act like a hard drive sitting on your computer. Either way, NO ONE will be able to get to your personal files. These vaults are so strong that even if your computer was stolen, they still can’t get into your personal information! Highly Recommended!

Different Types of Desktop Security Software

This will be the first of many types of different desktop security software. First being Encryption. First thing you should look for is that the program is using a US regulated encryption algorithm. These are virtually unbreakable, and if you could break the code it would take about 30 years even on a super computer.

Encryption using pictures. There is software that can take a jpg, gif, png, bitmap file and open it, and then allow you to type whatever you want in it. It will then encrypt what you wrote into the picture file. So to anyone who’s searching for personal info on you, if they come across that file, they will only see a picture. It takes a key to decrypt the file. You can also send the picture to anyone else as well even while it’s encoded. To decrypt the file they would simply need the same program you used to make the file, along with a key. Insuring that no one can see your private data except you or the person you are sending it to.

The other option for encrypting with a desktop security software program is to flat out encrypt the file itself. Meaning whatever file you choose to encrypt it will virtually zip that file up using it’s various encryption method. And again, it’s just as powerful, just as unbreakable, and you’ll need a key or password to decrypt the file. Here’s what you need to consider though.

Are you a good password creator? Can someone sit at your computer and think of what it would be? Do you have it written down, or memorized? You see, the person will be able to tell that’s the file he/she is looking for if they can see it, and from there tell what program you used to encrypt the file, and if you didn’t make a good password (at least 10 characters with numbers, letters, and symbols) they might be able to figure it out and use the very program you used to encrypt the file and decrypt it. So in my opinion, go with stealth if you can. Use the picture method. and keep that picture with your other pictures. No one will know it’s an encrypted file, they will just see a picture in your picture folder, and move on to find another file that may look suspicious.

First and foremost, Desktop Security Software is not the same as spyware blockers or antivirus and firewall software, it’s main purpose is to protect what’s on your desktop, or any file or folder in your computer from prying eyes. With that being said, please, whether you use a pc or mac, have a spyware and virus protection program that is constantly running and always protecting from the malicious attempts of others on the internet. Also have some sort of 2 way firewall protection software set up as well. There are many to chose from, even free. The firewall will notify you and allow you make adjustments if necessary in allowing or not allowing programs to either send information out of your computer as well as not allow outside hackers to gain control of your computer through your internet connection especially if you use an airport or wifi connection. Ok, those are the first line of defense. But what if the problem is keeping the leering eyes who frequent or live in your home or office away from files or folders you want to keep private? Well that’s what Desktop Security Software is all about. Keeping all info safe, private, and locked up. Most importantly…. you have the only key to unlock it all.
